MOOC: IMT’s Network Architectures courses
IMT has introduced the first set of French MOOC courses entirely dedicated to networks and telecommunications. Though the courses are designed for engineering students at IMT graduate schools, they are also useful for IT and telecommunications professionals.
Five 4- to 6-week MOOCs available at France Université Numérique
The course series will be rolled out between September and December 2015. An introductory course titled “Discovering Telecommunications” will be accompanied by four courses on data networks:
- Principles of Data Networks
- Internet Routing and Service Quality
- Mission IPv6: Internet, The Next Generation
- Understanding 4G: Fundamental Principles of Data Networks
The MOOC series was created by professors and researchers from IMT graduate schools (including Télécom Bretagne, Télécom SudParis, Télécom Ecole de Management, Télécom Paris and Télécom Lille) and by IMT partners (Université de Rennes 1, Université de la Réunion and Association G6) and teaches students everything they need to know about networks.
“The MOOCs were designed to serve as a complete curriculum,” says Pierre Rolin, coordinator of the Principles of Data Networks course. “Students will advance their knowledge, learn standardized vocabulary, see applications and benefit from effective teaching techniques.”
The courses will also be enhanced by contributions from industry members, who will share how they use the technologies discussed.
Joining a global movement, with support from the Patrick and Lina Drahi Foundation
“The Institute is a major player in innovation and the shaping of the digital world,” said Nicolas Sennequier, director of digital studies at IMT. “As such, we are proud to offer high-level massive open online courses (MOOCs) in our areas of expertise. Thanks to the support of the Patrick and Lina Drahi Foundation, we are able to offer five courses.”
Discovering Telecommunications
This course is an introduction to telecommunications and provides the key to understanding networks. Students will gain basic understanding and prepare for a certificate or degree program.
Class start date: October 1 – End date: November 5, 2015 – >> Information and registration
Principles of Data Networks
In this course, students will learn the science behind data networks such as the internet and telephone networks, which facilitate communication and information access. The class is aimed at students and professionals at the college level or higher with a background in science and computing. Class start date: September 17 – End date: December 31, 2015 – >> Information and registration
Mission IPv6: Internet, The Next Generation
The internet is currently experiencing growing pains. A thorough understanding of IPv6 has become essential for anyone involved in laying and operating networks. In this course, students will gain the skills they need to understand the IPv6 protocol and the mechanisms underlying it. The class is aimed primarily at computer science and networks students and at network engineers and technicians who wish to learn how to use IPv6.
Class start date: October 22 – End date: December 4, 2015 – >> Information and registration
Internet Routing and Service Quality
This course covers internal and external routing problems and how to provide quality service by throttling resources and managing network traffic. The class is aimed at computer science and networks students and at network engineers and technicians who wish to learn more about internet routing.
Class start date: November 5 – End date: December 17 – >> Information and registration
Understanding 4G: Fundamental Principles of Data Networks
This course offers an introduction to the architecture of 4G mobile networks and the IP-compatible protocols that handle flow, security, mobility and radio transmission. The class is primarily aimed IT, internet and telecom professionals and people working for or who will be working for an operator or manufacturer of network hardware.
Class start date: November 5 – End date: December 17 – >> Information and registration
