2024 Science Day: an Ocean of Knowledge

fete-de-la-science-2024

LInstitut Mines-Télécom is committed to bringing science to young people and the general public. Every year, our schools take part in Science Day and organize various events.

This year, the 33rd edition will take place from October 7 to 14 on the theme of “The Ocean”.

Discover the packed program at our schools.

IMT Atlantique:

On the Nantes campus:

The Subatech laboratory will be at the Planetarium on the weekend of October 4 and 5 with various activities:

  • 500,000 billion particles pass through you every second!

The KM3NeT (Cubic KiloMetre Neutrino Telescope) project involves two gigantic neutrino telescopes being installed between 2,500 and 3,500 m below sea level in the Mediterranean. Its aim is to attempt to discover the properties of the most elusive of all known particles: the neutrino. Though Jules Verne traveled 20,000 leagues (80 km) under the sea to meet Captain Nemo, some neutrinos will have traveled hundreds of millions of light-years through space before interacting near the KM3NeT site…

  • The cloud chamber (ages 15+)

Alongside the spark chamber, the cloud chamber, also known as a Wilson chamber, is the only device that can be used to detect cosmic rays.

  • Research pays off! (ages 15+)

Radioactivity is all around us, in everyday objects and in the human body. What if we told you that sometimes, we even eat radioactive products? Use radiation probes to test different radioactive sources and assess the impact of radioactivity on humans. A “cool bananas” experience! Find out more…

On the Brest campus:

Through the FabLab, the DELMA department is participating in the Brest Science Village coordinated by Oceanopolis:

For the occasion, two stands will be set up on the two days aimed at schoolchildren (Thursday Oct 10 and Friday Oct 11):

  • a FabLab stand in connection with Brest’s network of FabLabs and third places (FABulous LABoratory), where visitors can discover the MERITE educational kits, the Cubetto robot, an animated model, and a collaborative math game (last year’s CODEVSI project). Maud Tournery (Brest FabLab) will be hosting this stand with a few volunteers.
  • a stand showcasing research into big data and oceanographic models, with live demonstrations of models/OSE (Signal & Environment Observations) with researchers and PhD students (Pierre Tandeo, Ronan Fablet, Said Ouala, Lucas Drumetz and Carlos Granero Belinchon) from the MEE department (Lab-STICC), on October 10 at the Science Village in Le Quartz, Brest.

IMT Mines Albi
