Wanted: 20,000 more engineers in France\u2026 and fast!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The facts are clear: France lacks engineers \u2014 and the gap is growing. According to its 2025 outlook, the CDEFI (Conference of Deans of French Engineering Schools)<\/a> reports 48,700 degrees awarded in 2023\u20132024 \u2014 a number that\u2019s rising, but still well below what\u2019s needed. Companies are calling for about 20,000 additional engineers every year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Changing the narrative, broadening the field<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Some levers are already well known: reviving a passion for science from primary school,<\/strong> diversifying recruitment in engineering schools, revaluing technical pathways, encouraging career changes\u2026 Concrete initiatives are now underway at every level, driven and supported by national institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L’Ann\u00e9e de l’ing\u00e9nierie<\/strong> lanc\u00e9e le 1\u1d49\u02b3 octobre dernier par le CNRS<\/strong><\/a>, l\u2019Acad\u00e9mie des technologies<\/strong><\/a>, le Minist\u00e8re de l’\u00c9ducation nationale<\/strong><\/a> et le Minist\u00e8re charg\u00e9 de l’Enseignement sup\u00e9rieur et de la Recherche<\/strong><\/a>, \u00e0 l’instar de la F\u00eate de la Science<\/strong>, sont des exemples d’action de m\u00e9diation d’envergure nationale qui tentent de susciter un int\u00e9r\u00eat pour les sciences et des vocations d\u00e8s le plus jeune \u00e2ge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Launched on October 1st by the CNRS<\/a>, the Academy of Technologies<\/a>, the Ministry of Education<\/a>, and the Ministry of Higher Education and Research<\/a>, the Year of Engineering<\/strong> \u2014 like the Science Festival<\/strong> \u2014 is a national-scale science outreach initiative aiming to spark early interest in STEM and inspire future vocations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But beyond the question of appeal lies a core issue: the persistent underrepresentation of women in science and engineering careers<\/strong>. Though increasingly visible and acknowledged, this challenge remains largely underestimated. And without women, French engineering runs at half speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
