At the level of higher education and research, it mainly reveals a pedagogical rupture. In a few years, tools capable of producing text, explanations, or revision plans have overturned practices that have long been based on the reproduction of knowledge.

And usage patterns confirm this shift. The recent survey conducted by the Conference of Grandes Écoles (2025) shows how deeply AI has become embedded in the daily lives of educational institutions: 75% of students report regularly using AI tools, while 48% of teachers still limit their use to occasional practices, or even none at all. Meanwhile, general directors report 62% regular usage.

What is the value of a school assignment if we can no longer tell the difference between a student’s writing and that of a machine? Should we ban, restrict, or circumvent it? Or should we seize the opportunity to re-examine the essentials: what are we actually evaluating?

These questions reflect a deeper reality: an urgent need to adapt our practices, our benchmarks, and our pedagogical reflexes. Again.

Because humanity did not wait for the arrival of AI to fear the consequences of new technologies: from the invention of the printing press to that of the calculator, all educational revolutions (re)introduce the risk of confusing access to information with the development of the mind.

It is clear that these tools have not eliminated learning, but have transformed it.

We are now seeing a rapid adoption of AI tools in schools. The challenge today is to structure this dynamic by providing more sovereign and more frugal tools, training, and, above all, giving meaning to their use.

Artificial intelligence and education: Lucie Jacquet-Malo in Le Grand JT de l’Éducation

*Read in French: ‘À quoi bon apprendre ?’, Le 1 hebdo, N° 558, 27 août 2025.

AI for ‘augmented’ learning?

AI in education is not just about putting tools in the hands of students: it is transforming the way we learn, teach and assess. Research conducted in 2022 had already identified three key uses: supporting the learner, ‘augmenting’ the teacher and informing decision-making with data. Three entry points that paint AI neither as a threat nor as a magic wand, but as a lever for rethinking practices.

Used intentionally, AI frees up time for the tasks where humans really count. A McKinsey study of 2,000 teachers in four countries (Canada, Singapore, the United States and the United Kingdom) shows that generative AI can reduce their workload by 20 to 40%. This time saving is only worthwhile if it is reinvested in areas where humans provide irreplaceable value.

AI is therefore not a shortcut in education. It is a revealer: it forces institutions to clarify their priorities, expectations and vision of learning and teaching.

A double-edged sword: understanding the AI divide

The digital divide is not a new issue: many studies have shown how unequal access to tools and training has widened the gap for years.

The massive arrival of generative AI for the general public has not only exacerbated this phenomenon, but has also created a new one. The ‘AI divide,’ theorised by Warschauer et al. in 2023, refers to the gap between those who know how to understand, question, evaluate, and verify an AI-generated response and those who do not.

Teachers are also affected: many have never connected to a generative AI, either by choice or out of fear, although the situation is changing rapidly.

This divide is not just about a lack of equipment. It also involves a set of new skills: formulating a query, interpreting a response, verifying a source, exercising critical thinking. And these skills are far from being mastered uniformly. Between those who are experimenting and those who prefer to proceed cautiously, between those who are accompanied and those who are on their own, and between institutions that are already engaged and those that are still observing, the gaps can widen if we do not collectively take steps to prevent this.

Like many tools before it, AI is changing the game. What is not changing, however, is that we do not all start with the same hand.

IA: IMT accelerates its momentum through partnerships with Mistral AI, the ILaaS federation and the Ekitia label

SOVEREIGNTY ISSUES

As AI becomes more prevalent in our professional practices, the issue of sovereignty is coming to the forefront: who do we entrust our data, our practices, and our dependencies to? In an ecosystem where nothing is neutral, understanding who controls AI is becoming a strategic and ethical imperative.

‘We will never be 100% sovereign…’

In the SMART TECH Great Interview on Monday, November 24th, Lucie Jacquet-Malo discusses the growing use of generative AI in universities, the risks associated with data, and advocates for more sovereign tools like Mistral. This French generative AI (cc Arthur Mensch, Alumni Télécom Paris) offers genuine linguistic relevance, European hosting, better compliance with GDPR, and paves the way for a reduction in dependence on Big Tech.

Speaking to Delphine Sabattier, she emphasises that complete independence remains a challenge and that the key lies in a reasoned transformation of our practices.

Learning in the age of abundance: shaping minds

Ironically, while technology demonstrates the power of reading, the 2025 barometer of the National Book Centre warns of a decline in the number of readers in France.

Generative AI is based on a simple principle: it learns by reading millions of texts. Every interaction, every update modifies its neural architecture and enriches this network of neurons that produces a form of thought. This mechanism is akin to perfectly, or almost perfectly, imitating the way our brain works.

Learn more? Read I’MTech article: What are neural networks?

It must be reiterated: artificial intelligences have their limitations. They make mistakes, reproduce biases, omit information, simplify, and even tend towards ‘model collapse’ (or how AI models trained on data generated by other models eventually lose quality). Their apparent brilliance does not erase their flaws or our responsibility to use them wisely.

Without training, it is very likely to have an accident, or even to kill someone, but by learning to drive and respecting the rules, it is a great tool that offers a lot of possibilities. It’s about rediscovering the essence of the educational gesture, adapting it to a world where information moves faster than ever.

If AI is changing the game, it’s not changing the fundamentals: learning is based on relationships, effort, doubt, curiosity – all things that machines don’t master.

The transition we’re undergoing is neither simple nor linear.
