The SEE (French Society for Electricity, Electronics, and Information and Communication Technologies) has rewarded Télécom Bretagne researcher Frédéric Cuppens by presenting him with the Ampère Medal. This distinction is awarded to an individual who has done exceptional work for the benefit of SEE in the scientific fields of electricity, electronics and information and communication technologies. Silvère Bonnabel, a researcher at Mines ParisTech, has received the SEE Brillouin-Glavieux award for his work on nonlinear filtering techniques for navigation and sway control for assisting the operation of cranes

November 2015

Guillaume Terrasse, a PhD student at Télécom ParisTech, was one of the three recipients of the GERG Young Researcher’s Prize awarded by the EGATEC 2015, European Gas Technology conference, for his paper “Automatic localization of gas pipes thanks to GPR device”. Find out more.

Ange Nzihou, Director of the Rapsodee Research Centre at Mines Albi-Carmaux, has been awarded the prize for Progress and Innovation in Research by the Chinese Academy of Science for “the remarkable contribution of the past 10 years in advancing Franco-Chinese scientific research and in developing research in the areas of energy and the environment”. Frédéric Dufaux, CNRS Research Director at the Télécom ParisTech Information Processing and Communication Laboratory, and Editor-in-Chief of the journal Signal Processing: Image Communication, has been named an IEEE Fellow for his contributions in the area of visual information processing and coding. Soumya Kanti Datta and Christian Bonnet, researchers in the Eurecom Mobile Communications Department, received 3rd prize in the IEEE GCCE 2015 Excellent Paper Award for their article “IoT device management framework for smart home scenarios”, at the 4th Global Conference on Consumer Electronics. Raphaël Troncy, researcher in the Eurecom Multimedia Department together with his team (Giuseppe Rizzo, Julien Plu, Ahmad Assaf, Jose Luis Redondo Garcia), won first prize in the Semantic Web Challenge at the ISWC 2015 conference, 14th International Semantic Web Conference, with their project and application “3cixty@Expo Milano 2015” ! On the occasion of the 8th K-CAP Conference, International Conference on Knowledge Capture, Jose Luis Redondo Garcia, Giuseppe Rizzo and Raphaël Troncy, researchers in the Eurecom Multimedia Department, received the prize for the best article for “The Concentric Nature of News Semantic Snapshots”. The prize for the best poster was awarded to Giuseppe Rizzo*, Oscar Cordho, Raphaël Troncy*, Julien Plu*, Juan Carlos Ballesteros Hermida and Ahmad Assaf* for “The 3cixty Knowledge Base for Expo Milano 2015: Enabling Visitors to Explore the City”. Francesco P. Andriulli, a Professor at the Microwave Department of Telecom Bretagne, received the 2015 ICEAA IEEE-APWC Award for the article “On the High Frequency Behavior and Stabilization of a Preconditioned and Resonance-Free Formulation”, F. P. Andriulli, K. Cools, I. Bogaert. He was presented with the award at the 2015 ICEAA, 17th International Conference on Electromagnetics in Advanced Applications. Find out more.

Didier Mayer, Head of the Department of Energy and Processes at Mines ParisTech, received the Chime Bell Award from Hubei province (China). He is one of the 10 foreign experts rewarded in 2015 for their significant contribution to the social and economic development of this Chinese province. Find out more.

August 2015

Romain Quey, researcher at Mines Saint-Étienne Georges Friedel Laboratory, received the Jean Mandel prize for 2015. He was rewarded for his original work on the development of polycrystalline microstructures in metals subjected to large deformations. The Jean Mandel prize, co-sponsored by l’École Polytechnique and Mines ParisTech, is intended to encourage scientific research in the field of solid mechanics or mechanics and the rheology of materials.

July 2015

Simon Adrian, PhD student at Télécom Bretagne, received 3rd prize in the category Student Best Paper Award at the 2015 IEEE International Symposium on Antennas and Propagation and North American Radio Science meeting. He was rewarded for his article “A Hermitian and Well-Conditioned EFIE for Fast Iterative and Direct Solvers” co-authored with Francesco Andriulli, Full Research Professor at Télécom Bretagne, and Thomas Eibert.

Boulbaba Ben Amor, researcher in the Computing and Networks Department at Télécom Lille, was promoted to the status of IEEE Senior Member. This distinction rewards the quality of his research within the international community on pattern recognition and computer vision. Find out more

Armand Hatchuel, a researcher at Mines ParisTech and deputy director of the Center for Scientific Management, was nominated for Design Society Fellow. The nomination goes to researchers who have made significant contributions to design research. Hatchuel’s nomination recognizes his work in various design theories, including in C-K theory. Elie Hachem, a researcher at Mines ParisTech, received an IBM Faculty Award at Summer Camp for his Aeromines platform, which he developed and opened up to engineering students via a MOOC called AfterMOOC. IBM Faculty Awards is an annual cash-only prize granted to innovative, educational projects via an international competition by professors and researchers. Find out more

Clémentine Maurice, PhD CIFRE Eurecom/Technicolor, Aurélien Francillon, a researcher at Eurecom, and their coauthors received the Best Paper Award for their article C5: Cross-cores cachecovert channel” at the 12th International Conference on Detection of Intrusions and Malware & Vulnerability Assessment (DIMVA 2015).

At the 21st Congress of the European Society of Biomechanics (ESB), Stéphane Avril, a researcher at Mines Saint-Etienne, and his coauthors M. Bersi, C. Bellini, J. Humphrey and K. Genovese won the ESB Poster Award for their communication titled “Regional identification of mechanical properties in murine thoracic aortic aneurysm and dissection.” Find out more

David Gesbert, Full Research Professor and Head of Eurecom Mobile Communications Department, has won the ERC (European Research Council) call for proposals for the “Consolidator Grant”. This funding will finance his research on wireless communications systems beyond the 5G standard.

Julien Plu, Giuseppe Rizzo and Raphaël Troncy, researchers at Eurecom, received the Open Knowledge Extraction Challenge Award for their article “A Hybrid Approach for Entity Recognition and Linking” at the 12th European Semantic Web Conference (ESWC 2015).

May 2015

Dorian Depriester received the 2015 prize for the best thesis, awarded by the French Titanium Association, for his work on the “Characterization and modelling of backward cold flowforming of TA6V”. Find out more.

Johan Debayle, Researcher at Mines Saint-Étienne, has been made a Senior Member of IEEE. The distinction is a sign of recognition of his research work in the field of image processing, analysis and geometric modeling.

The Best Application Paper Award has been awarded to Daria Battini, Xavier Delorme, Alexandre Dolgui and Fabio Sgarbossa for the article titled “Assembly line balancing with ergonomics paradigms – two alternative methods”, presented at the INCOM 2015 (15th Symposium on Information Control Problems in Manufacturing) conference. X. Delorme and A. Dolgui are researchers at Institut Fayol of Mines Saint-Étienne.

Yanyan Yang, a PhD student at Mines ParisTech, received the Best Student Paper Award during the INCOM 2015 (15th Symposium on Information Control Problems in Manufacturing) conference, for her article titled “A model to take advantage of Physical Internet for Vendor Inventory Management”, jointly written with Shenle Pan and Éric Ballot, researchers at Mines ParisTech.

The AGRH-FNEGE 2015 thesis prize was awarded to Olga Lelebina, a Doctor at Mines ParisTech, for her thesis titled “La gestion des experts en entreprise: dynamique des collectifs de professionnels et offre de parcours” (‘Expert management in businesses: professional group dynamics and career offerings’), which she defended in February 2014. April 2015

Jean-Guillaume Fages, who earned a PhD from Mines Nantes in 2014, won the IA 2015 thesis prize awarded by the AFIA (The French Association for Artificial Intelligence). This prize is awarded for the best French thesis of the year on the theme of artificial intelligence. Today Jean-Guillaume Fages is the chief executive of Cosling, a start-up incubated at Mines Nantes.

Loïc Brévault, a researcher at ONERA (French Aerospatiale Research Centre) and at Mines Saint-Étienne, won the ONERA thesis prize in the Information Processing and Modeling category. His thesis titled “Multidisciplinary Optimisation under uncertainty – Application for the design of a launch vehicle” is co-supervised by Rodolphe Le Riche, assistant director in charge of research at the Institut Fayol, and Mathieu Balesdent and Nicolas Bérend from ONERA.

Quentin Jacquemart, Ernst Biersack, researchers at Eurecom, and their co-authors won a Best Paper Award for their article “Investigating the nature of routing anomalies: closing in on subprefix hijacking attacks”, during the TMA 2015 (7th International Workshop on Traffic Monitoring and Analysis).

David Gesbert, a professor in charge of the Mobile Communications Department at Eurecom and his co-authors received the Best Tutorial Paper Award from the prestigious IEEE Communications Society for the article “Multi-Cell MIMO Cooperative Networks: A New Look at Interference”, published in the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications, Vol.  28, No. 9, December 2010, pp. 1380-1408.

Maha Messaadi and Philippe Kapsa, researchers at Centrale Lyon, and Guillaume Kermouche, researcher at Mines Saint-Etienne, were awarded the Ken Ludema Best Paper for their article titled “Numerical and experimental analysis of dynamic oblique impact: effect of impact angle”, presented at the WOM 2015 conference (20th International Conference on Wear of Materials).

Mickaël Binois, a co-supervision PhD student at Renault/Mines Saint-Étienne, received the prize for the best oral presentation during the conference MascotNum2015 (Methods of Stochastic Analysis for digital codes and processing), for his presentation titled “High-dimensional Bayesian multi-objective optimization with random embeddings”. His thesis is being co-supervised by David Ginsbourger, Berne University, Frédéric Mercier, Renault and Olivier Roustant from Mines Saint-Etienne.

March 2015

Ehsan Sedgh Gooya, Dominique Pastor and Vincent Gripon, researchers at Télécom Bretagne, won the Best Paper Award for their article “Automatic Face Recognition Using SIFT and Neural Network of Tagged Cliques” presented at the international conference Cognitive 2015: The Seventh International Conference on Advanced Cognitive Technologies and Applications. Christian Roux, Director of Research and Innovation at Mines Saint-Étienne, received the Claude Fourcade prize during the journées RITS “Research in Imaging and Technologies for Health”, organized under the aegis of the SFGBM (French Society for Biological and Medical Engineering). This honor is awarded every other year to a scientist who “has worked in an exceptional manner to develop biological and medical engineering in France”.

One of the two Jacques Neveu 2014 thesis prizes was awarded to Emilie Kaufmann, who earned her PhD from Télécom ParisTech, for her thesis titled “Analysis of Bayesian and frequentist strategies for the sequential allocation of resources” presented in October 2014. The Jacques Neveu thesis prize awarded by the SMAI (Society for Applied and Industrial Mathematics) MAS group, recognizes one or two theses on probability or statistics presented in France every year.

Emilie Guy, Parinya Punpongsanon, Daisuke Iwai, Kosuke Sato and Tamy Boubekeur received a  Best Paper Award for their article “LazyNav: 3D Ground Navigation with Non-Critical Body Parts”, on the occasion of the IEEE 3DUI 2015 conference (IEEE 10th Symposium on 3D User Interfaces). Emilie Guy is a PhD student and Tamy Boubekeur is a professor in the Signal and Image Processing department at Télécom ParisTech.

Dirk Slock, a professor at Eurecom, has been elevated to the rank of EURASIP Fellow 2015. Every year since 2007, four researchers in signal processing have been promoted to the rank of “EURASIP Fellow “, EURASIP’s (European Association for Signal Processing) most prestigious honor.

January 2015

Xiaolan Xie, a researcher at CIS (Centre for Biomedical and Healthcare Engineering) at Mines Saint-Etienne, has been appointed as an IEEE Fellow, a prestigious recognition for his work on industrial and healthcare engineering.

Stéphane Avril, lecturer and researcher at the Healthcare and Engineering Center (CIS) at Mines Saint-Etienne, secured a “Consolidator Grant from the ERC (European Research Council) for his project BIOLOCHANICS, in partnership with Yale University (United States).
